ZONING DOCTRINE AND THE NATIONAL QUESTION IN NIGERIA (2022) is a companion of my work entitled ZONING DEBATE IN NIGERIAN POLITICS published in December 2021. This book interrogates the rationale of the practice whereby party lords in Nigeria share elective positions, such as Presidents, Governors, Senators, Members of House of Representatives, Council Chairmen and Councillors, to particular geo-political areas in advance of actual voting at party primaries to nominate candidates, thereby necessarily excluding aspirants from areas that are not favoured by zoning on each occasion. The book examines the relevance of this practice to resolution of the national question in Nigeria which pertains to how citizens of a multi-national and multi-cultural country can coexist for peaceful development in one nation-state.
The economic and political consequences of the doctrine are discussed within the wider context of ‘sharing ideology’ which has dominated the political thinking of Nigerian leaders since the transition from military to civil rule in May 1999. The presentation is detailed, and copiously illustrated with case studies from contemporary Nigerian economic and political history.
